Saw the Rough Draft of my Cover!!!

Welcome everyone!

I was just sent the first draft for the cover of Book 2! My very talented cover artist gave me three different versions to choose from. Each was fantastic, and I'm thrilled to go with the one I picked.

Naturally, I made several requests for revisions. That always happens, so the next version will probably be about two or three weeks away.

I also got an update about the interior of Book 2. I should probably get a look at it next week or the week after! It all means that everything is proceeding according to the schedule I had planned, which is a nice change from Book 1.

Stay tuned, as more updates are coming, and don't forget Thursday's new reveal!

Finally, I do want to remind everyone about the Drive to 25 Campaign.

We're trying to get to 25 copies of the Book 1 audio book sold by November. Currently, we're at 19. Please help by sharing these blog posts or sharing links to my audio book.

You can find it in the following locals:

*SPOILERS* 5th Reveal for Book 2 - The 4th Rose!

Welcome everyone!

This week I'll be revealing the rose for Leo, second in command at the Lodge under Thaul. Leo is a a burly man with bright red hair and an even brighter red beard. He's cantankerous often times, but loyal to his Lodge and even more loyal to his leader.

If you have trouble remembering him, he is the huntsman that first discovered Tristan in the Lodge in Book 1. He tossed Tristan into their interrogation room, suspecting him to be some sort of spy. Thaul took an instant liking to Tristan, however, and assigned him to Mersha's troupe.

In the rest of Book 1, Leo faded into the background. In Book 2, though, he will have a much more prominent role.

This is your last chance to look away before any further spoilers!

Leo's rose reflects his personality. It is orderly and symmetrical. The thorns appear in two perfectly aligned formations on each end of the stem. The leaves, likewise, are balanced and well cared-for. The petals on the bloom are neither too showy nor too discrete. They are as they should be for a well-disciplined hunter of Unhallowed.

For those who live a very structured life, I imagine Leo is a character you can easily identify with. He likes the Lodge run smoothly and demands hunters respect the chain of command.

His demand for order can sometimes run afoul of huntsmen more used to independence. The Lodge is a loose confederation, not a military organization. Hunters can join and quit as they please. Thus, there is always a delicate balancing act for the leadership: how much can you demand from someone before they just walk away?

It's a never-ending struggle that Thaul manages well. Perhaps that is why Leo is so loyal to him. Without Thaul, it's hard to know if the Lodge could hold itself together.

Having Another Busy Week

Welcome everyone!

This week is super busy for me. I'll be going on a mini-vacation next week, so I have to get everything around before I go.

HOWEVER, there will still be a reveal tomorrow for Book 2. I'm really excited to share it with you. It's going to rock. Please check back then!

Goals for the Weekend 2019-09-20

Welcome everyone!

This weekend looks like it's still going to be HOT. Late summer / early autumn are my favorite times of year. I love getting outside and enjoying the colors and dry, cool weather. Unfortunately, things have not been cool, and going outside with the heat index above 100 degrees has been an anathema.

Thus, I'll probably be stuck inside again. On the bright side, that means I'll be able to some more recording. I'd like to get two or three more chapters done along with planning for the next book.

So this weekend's goals are:

  • Record 2-3 chapters for BOOK 2 audiobook
  • Continue planning for BOOK 3
If I can do all that, I'll have a good weekend. I hope you do too :)

*SPOILERS* 4th Reveal for BOOK 2 - The 3rd Rose!

Welcome everyone,

Now we're getting to the good stuff. Last week's reveal, in case you missed it, was on the Facebook fanpage. If you haven't had a chance to like and follow that page, please do. The curator has put a lot of time and effort into it, and I really appreciate that.

This week's rose is from the leader of the Huntsmen's Lodge. His name is Thaul DeSardis, and he inherited the leadership role in Book 1 from his predecessor: Deborah Stuyvesant.

Thaul can be a vain and aloof man at times, but he is also an expert warrior. He has battled many powerful Unhallowed abominations in his time and never been defeated in a one-on-one dual.

He has taken a special liking to Tristan. He has seen the potential in that young man and made sure that he has felt welcomed in the Lodge.

Despite his success and reputation, Thaul is still troubled at times. He feels the town does not respect his accomplishments and the threat from the Unhallowed always weighs on his mind. He longs to find peace and contentment. Alas, those things are rare luxuries for those in positions of authority.

Turn back now, if you wish to avoid any (admittedly mild) spoilers for Book 2:

Unlike all the other huntsmen, Thaul's rose is white. It's the symbol of leadership in the Lodge. His bloom is large but wilting somewhat. Also notice how the stem is jagged and wayward at times. Thaul's journey in life has not been an easy one. His wife and son are both deceased. Most of the men and women who served in his first troupe are either retired or dead. Leading the Lodge at times has been more about managing rebellious personalities rather than fighting evilkind. Thus, his stem has twisted itself in knots at various points and struggled to straighten itself out again.

I hope you enjoyed this week's reveal. Be back next Thursday for yet another one. I look forward to sharing even more with you soon :)

Vids I Enjoy #2: Character Motivation

Welcome everyone!

Today I want to highlight another video that I've found tremendously useful. It's all about character motivation.

I think motivation is one of the harder things for writers to nail down, myself included. Often we have a character who "wants to save the world!" That's great and all, but the reader will want to know why he/she wants to save the world. What makes the world worth saving in that character's mind?

That's where this video comes in. It relies heavily on someone seeing the Batman Begins movie, which if you haven't, is a high recommend from me. Most people have, so I feel confident in sharing this with you.

Anyhow, if you struggle with making characters "believable" then their lack of a compelling motivation might be why. This video really helped me round out my characters, especially my supporting characters, so I hope you finding helpful too.

A Look at the Week Ahead

Welcome everyone!

Life is coming at me fast. I've got to get a lot of work done for my job and a lot of work done for Book 2.

First, I need to get more recording done. I'm on Chapter 7 at this point for the audio book, which isn't bad, but it's not fantastic either.

I also have a side project I'm working on for the Hunter's Rose series. It was a request made by a friend, so I have to start outlining and plotting that one out. I'll share it with everyone once it's done.

Additionally, I have a reveal coming for this Thursday. Wait until you see it. It's going to be awesome.

Finally, I have to make contacts for a few more book signings. I'll share more of my thoughts on that down the road.

Anyway. It's a busy week! I hope your week goes smoothly.

Also, I do want to remind everyone about the Drive to 25 Campaign.

We're trying to get to 25 copies of the Book 1 audio book sold by November. Currently, we're at 19. Please help by sharing these blog posts or sharing links to my audio book.

Welcome everyone!

This weekend, I'm really going to focus on recording. Ideally, I'll get three or four chapters finished. On Monday, I'll let ya know how I did!

*SPOILERS* This Week's Reveal is on the Fan Page!

Welcome everyone!

This week, I wanted to reach out and support a group that's supporting me. I approached the fellow running the Facebook Fanpage for The Huntsman and the She-Wolf. I offered to let him reveal any new rose he wanted, and he was ecstatic. The one he chose is a really great one. It belongs to the character Bartonomous, which you met in Book 1.

So if you'd like to see what his rose looks like, you can check it out HERE!

Doing Two Types of Writing At the Same Time

Welcome everyone!

Today I'm going to talk about how I'm able to get so much accomplished with my writing while at the same time holding down a full time job and being active with my family and community.

One of the interesting things I've discovered about writing is that different aspects of it use different parts of my brain. Essentially, I can divide the tasks into logical tasks and creative tasks. Not that creativity doesn't require a certain amount of logic and logic doesn't require creativity, but for the most part, the things I have to do primarily use one or the other.

Creative tasks include brainstorming, plotting, writing, and revision. Logical tasks include proofreading, editing, coordinating with artists, and marketing.

The cool thing is, I've managed to figure out how to do one set of creative tasks at the same time I'm doing one set of logical tasks. So for instance, while I'm correcting mistakes found by my proofreader, I can be brainstorming ideas for the next book. While I'm writing first-draft chapters, I can commission art and layout.

I've developed a handy chart that helps me break down what I'm doing and stay organized:

You might notice that Revising is on their twice. There are really two types of revision I do. The first type, under Writing, is the type where I'm re-reading my first drafts. That type of revision still requires a great deal of creativity because it often involves me writing newly original sentences and paragraphs. Whole chapters may need to be rebuilt from the ground up. In those instances, I've found I can't concentrate on making new content for two different books at the same time. I just get confused and stressed out.

The second type of Revising is where I get feedback from my Beta Readers and my Editor. Those kinds of corrections require much less creativity because the work I have to do is laid out for me. I just have to do what they said to do. Simple. Logical.

So, just like I can't make a Beat Sheet for one book while Drafting another book, I also can't work on my proofreads and edits while trying to make the audio book or work on my marketing plan. When I'm editing, all I see is the mistakes I've made. It's daunting, and the last thing I'm able to think about is why anyone would want to read this trash. And of course, how could I record audio of a book full of grammatical and spelling errors? I'd be tripping up every third sentence. That sort of thing has to wait until the final draft is ready to go.

Now, it would be possible to mix Pre-Writing with Publication or Writing with Production, but I have found that doesn't go well together either. For one thing, I have to move from left to right along that chart for each book. I begin with brainstorming, then listing characters, then outlining, then drafting, then revising, then editing, then proofreading, then cover-layout-audio and marketing.

As a result, I can't do something like Drafting before I make the Beat Sheet. I also can't do my own revisions while at the same time asking an editor to give me her revisions. Thus, I've found Pre-Writing goes well with Production, and Writing goes well with Publication.

Ok, so why am I bringing all this up you might wonder. Well, Book 2 is in the Publication phase. I'll let you infer what that might mean for what else I'm working on right now ;-D

Peace,

-Troy

The Weekend That Was and the Week That Will Be

Welcome everyone!

This weekend I was able to get two chapters recorded for the audio book. It went smoothly, but I didn't have time to do more.

I was kinda beating myself up for that when my wife reminded me that I don't need to be so hard on myself. I have plenty of time before launch comes to get the audio book finished.

She's right, and if I put too much pressure on myself, I'll get burned out. You'll often hear authors talk about that. Just think, George RR Martin has been working on one of his book for eight years now. So burn out is real, and it's certainly something I want to avoid.

I have come up with a new organization for my life that does allow me to work on my books fairly consistently. I'm pretty happy with it, and I'm hoping I'll be able to maintain it for the next several months at the very least.

That said, this week is looking horrendous at work. I'll be staying late more nights for one reason or another, so the odds of me getting any further recordings done this week appear grim. If I do, though, I'll be thrilled.

Anyway, just remember, this week's reveal for Book 2 should come from the Facebook Fanclub. Please check them out and keep an eye on it Thursday!

-Troy

Goals for the Weekend 2019-09-06

Welcome everyone!

This weekend I'm going to have a bit of free time, so I plan to use it well. I've made contact with the fellow who runs the Facebook fanclub for my books, and he's going to have my preview for next week. We just have to work out a few of the finer details.

So, here's what I hope to accomplish this weekend:

  • Finalize next week's reveal with the fanclub
  • Record at least two, preferably three, chapters for the Book 2 audio book
  • Continue brainstorming the plot for Book 3
If I can do all that, I'll have a good weekend. I hope you have a productive weekend as well!

*Spoiler* 2nd Reveal for BOOK 2 - The First Rose!

Welcome everyone!

It's Thursday and that means it's reveal time again! Today, I'm going to show off one of the new roses from Book 2. If you want to avoid all spoilers, leave now. This is only a small one, but it definitely gives something away.

Just to review, here is what the roses from Book 1 looked like:

Alright, with that taken care of, let's talk about what I'm revealing. This first rose is among the most unique that will ever appear in my books. Most of the roses are full-grown; however, this one is not. It's quite small, almost unobtrusive.

That might lead one to conclude it belongs to a child. It doesn't, but it is certainly suggestive about this character's mental and emotional condition. This character does not appear until mid-way through Book 2, but I chose this rose to go first because I think it's the most mysterious of the new images:

Notice how the bloom is closed so tightly and just how small it is. The leaves are young but strong, suggesting there is much live left in this flower. I also want to direct your attention to the stem. It's thin but strong and straight. The bloom only needs a little bit of coxing, some motivation perhaps, to fully realize its potential.

This is the first of five new roses I will be debuting in this novella. Next Thursday's will come to you from a different source. I hope you check in to see how it comes about. It will be something both new and familiar to those who've read The Huntsmen and the She-Wolf. It's from one of my personal favorite characters!

Until then, take care of each other.

Peace,

-Troy

First Step Toward a Tangible Goal

Welcome everyone!

Last night I recorded the first chapter for the audio book for Book 2! I really wanted to begin the process back in August, but work was just too busy and I was just too tired.

However, last night, I was able to get some time to myself and get the recording done! It went very smoothly, much more smoothly than chapter one of The Huntsman and the She-Wolf. I'm pretty happy about that.

I'd like to get one chapter done a night. I doubt I'll be able to keep that schedule, but it's a goal anyway.

I'm very excited to be recording again. I truly think that Book 2 will be superior to Book 1 in every way. I can't wait for you to get your first peeks at it. During teaser season, I may even post the first audio chapter of Book 2 up for free. What would you think of that?

It's also a good time to mention the Drive to 25 Campaign.

We're trying to get to 25 copies of the Book 1 audio book sold by November. Currently, we're at 19. Please help by sharing these blog posts or sharing links to my audio book.

Got a Chance to Do Some Sightseeing

Welcome everyone!

We had a long weekend over the last three days, so I got a chance to do some vacationing. My family and I traveled to Nashville Tennessee to check out The Parthenon they have there in Centennial Park.

I have a love for history as well as literature. The Greeks are widely regarded as the first "Western" civilization. Their art, poetry, stories, religion, and history have become part of our culture in so many subtle ways.

So, getting the chance to go and visit a recreation of one of their monuments was an opportunity I didn't want to pass up. The building is a reddish stone structure, and on the inside is a recreation of the goddess Athena. Check out the picture below:

The statue is awe inspiring. It's so rare to see anything that large and detailed inside a structure. I can imagine just how much it would have influenced the ancients who saw such beauty.

Seeing it made me appreciate how values and traditions have been handed down for hundreds and, really, thousands of years. As an author, I feel like I am participating in the Greek tradition of heroic storytelling, if only in a small way.

Anyway, as for my goals for the weekend. I've had some success. I've gotten in touch with the Facebook fanclub for my novellas. They'll have an exclusive reveal for my book this week. Be looking for it on Thursday. I'll be sure to link it.

Anyway, I just want to remind everyone about the Drive to 25 Campaign.
